Feature: A Long Way From Paris by E.C. Murray

Named a “Best Book of 2014″ by Kirkus and selected as a feature in its “off-the-beaten path category, A Long Way From Paris tells the story of Elizabeth who hopes to become a famous writer in Paris, shedding her drugs, lover, and aimless life. Instead, she carves a life herding goats during raging blizzards at a mountain farm in southern France. With no water, heat, and barely any electricity, Elizabeth struggles under a harsh matriarch. She ponders her fears, relationships, spirituality as well as her younger life as an elite New England preppie and later, Oregon hippie. Befriending a shy Australian goatherder, she transforms into strong hard-working farm woman, emerging as the leader in the midst of a devastating tragedy.

“Murray is both a sharp observer of the local color and a cartographer of her own internal geography, making A Long Way from Paris as richly textured as fromage de chèvre.” Langdon Cook, author of The Mushroom Hunters, winner of the 2014 Pacific Northwest Book Award and 2014 Washington State Book Award
